What is a surgical mask?

Surgical masks are intended to be worn by health professionals to shield during nursing and surgical procedures. The disposable masks work by creating a barrier between the respiratory system (mouth and nose) of the wearer, and the immediate environment.

What is the difference between Civilian and Type 2R surgical masks?

Civilian Masks are 3 ply, made from 3 layers of fabric to protect the mouth and nose, and rectangle in shape rather than specifically shaped to the face. These are commonly used by the public for day-to-day wear when masks are required.

The Type IIR masks have ASTM certification and are suitable to sell to the NHS and recommended by World Health Organisation to sell into healthcare with the R specifying they are fluid resistant to offer increased protection compared to a standard mask as they have a higher filtration rate for potentially-infected droplets from entering the respiratory system. What is the difference between a surgical face mask and a respiratory mask (N95/ FFP2)?

A surgical face mask is disposable and loose-fitting when fitted correctly, designed to help block large droplets or sprays from reaching the wearer's mouth or nose. Due to its loose-fitting, this type of mask doesn't offer the same level of protection as a fitted mask and they do not filter the air of small particles that can be transmitted by a cough or a sneeze.

Respiratory masks offer enhanced protection from smaller particles, as are they more fitted to the wearer's face, creating a barrier from germs.

Are these masks biodegradable or compostable?

Yes, these masks can be sent for composting or anaerobic digestion, or incineration at end of life, offering an upgrade on traditional plastic masks which are ending up in landfill.
