Vegware

Vegware — who they are and what they stand for

Vegware is a Scottish packaging manufacturer, founded in 2006 in Edinburgh. From those beginnings, it has grown into a global specialist in plant-based, compostable foodservice packaging, with distribution reaching the UK, EU, US and beyond. Their stated vision is “a world where renewable materials are the norm.”  Their mission: to provide compostable disposables that address the challenge of recycling food-service packaging, helping businesses divert food waste from landfill.

Vegware’s product range is wide: hot and cold cups and lids; cutlery (paper, wooden, plant-based); food containers and takeaway boxes; plates, bowls, molded-fibre tableware; deli containers; and more.  Many products are also available with custom printing — enabling businesses to brand packaging while choosing sustainability.

Materials & Compostability — what makes Vegware eco-friendly

What sets Vegware apart is their commitment to using renewable, lower-carbon, reclaimed or recycled materials, not conventional plastics. For example: some of their products use a bioplastic lining (such as BioPBS — derived from sugarcane, cassava or corn) for cup lids; others use plant-based “Mater-Bi” material — made from vegetable oils, starch or agricultural waste — for bin liners and sacks.

All Vegware products are designed to be industrially compostable alongside food waste — where accepted by the local waste or composting system. Their entire range holds comprehensive compostability certification, making them unique in the UK packaging industry.  Independent certification bodies such as those applying the European standard EN 13432 or the American ASTM D6400 have verified that Vegware’s finished products — including printed packaging — can biodegrade fully under industrial composting conditions.

Under such conditions, Vegware says their products can break down and return to soil within 12 weeks — turning what would otherwise be waste into compost that nourishes soil.

Vegware’s commitment to compostability goes beyond materials: the company also works with the waste sector, offering consultancy and support for clients to establish composting or “closed-loop” waste collections.

Why Vegware matters — sustainability, waste reduction, real-world impact

Vegware’s packaging aims to solve a core problem with foodservice disposables: once food is combined with conventional plastic packaging, it often becomes difficult to recycle. Compostable packaging — properly managed — allows both food waste and packaging to be diverted from landfill into compost that helps restore soil.

By offering certified compostable alternatives, Vegware enables businesses — from coffee shops to event caterers, canteens to take-away food providers — to make a tangible shift toward lower-impact waste management. Their environmental policies, supply-chain oversight, and commitment to traceability reflect a serious approach, not greenwashing.

Furthermore, Vegware’s success shows that sustainable products can scale: their rapid growth has earned them recognition among the UK’s fastest-growing exporters, and a series of awards — including the Queen's Award for Enterprise (Innovation) in 2016.

They illustrate how innovation, certification, supply-chain responsibility and collaboration with waste/composting partners can deliver packaging that is both functional and environmentally responsible. Their “closed-loop” composting services and consultation support further help businesses adopt compostables effectively — not just as a marketing message, but as real, measurable waste reduction.

Challenges & Realities — composting depends on proper disposal

It is important to note that Vegware’s compostability only delivers environmental benefit where there is access to suitable industrial composting facilities and proper waste-management systems.

Some local authorities or waste-collections (especially household bins or standard recycling) are unable to accept compostable packaging due to contamination or lack of sorting technology. In those cases, used Vegware items may end up in general waste, reducing the environmental benefit.

Vegware themselves acknowledge this challenge and encourage businesses to use their consultancy services to explore local composting options — by partnering with waste hauliers, or using their own “Close the Loop” programme in some regions.

This highlights a wider issue in using compostable disposables: materials are only half the solution — the waste infrastructure must support them too.

Vegware as a leader & enabler for sustainable food packaging

Overall, Vegware stands out as a pioneer and leader in sustainable catering disposables. Their commitment to plant-based, renewable materials; rigorous certification for compostability; and their efforts to work with waste management infrastructure — not simply sell “eco cups” — have helped define what “sustainable disposables” can and should be.

By offering a full product range — from hot and cold cups to containers, cutlery, boxes and more — all responsibly manufactured and designed for composting where accepted, Vegware provides viable and scalable alternatives to traditional disposable plastics. Their growth and success demonstrates that compostable disposables aren’t a niche concept, but a practical, real-world solution for businesses looking to reduce environmental impact.

In a time when waste, plastic pollution, soil degradation and resource use are pressing global concerns, Vegware’s approach — linking materials, certification, composting infrastructure and customer support — offers a meaningful path toward more sustainable foodservice packaging.
